How to choose a good sunscreen.

UVA & UVB broad spectrum protection

SPF stands for sun protection factor and refers to the ability of a sunscreen to block ultraviolet B (UVB) ONLY, not UVA. It offers an insurance against sunburn but not against photo ageing. Always look for a UVA & UVB sunscreen.

Sunscreen is NOT water resistant

This is a marketing trick. Sunscreens are no longer allowed to be labelled as “waterproof” or “sweat proof” because these terms can be misleading. No matter what is written on the bottle always reapply your sunscreen after swimming or exercising.

SPF 15 or higher

The difference between LOW and HIGH SPF is very small, just 5%, i.e. SPF 15 offers 94% protection, when SPF 50 offers 99% protection. 

Use SPF correctly

NO sunscreen offers 100% protection. That’s why the SPF number is not as important as using the sunscreen correctly especially when exposed to direct sunlight.

  • Use a lot
  • Apply 20 minutes before going out
  • Reapply every 2 hours if staying outdoor
  • Reapply after exercise or swimming
  • Pay close attention to your face, ears, neck, arms, and any other areas not covered by clothing
  • If you’re going to wear makeup, put your sunscreen on first
  • Use broad spectrum sunscreen (UVA & UVB protection)
  • Don’t use expired products, they lose their effectiveness
  • Never rely on sunscreen alone, wear sunglasses, hat, and cover your body with clothes

Why we should protect our skin against UV

You have probably heard hundreds of times in your beauty salon that you should use SPF but do you really know why? Is it just a selling trick to make us buying more sunscreens or really a thing we should worry about?

Let's begin with some facts.

Sunlight is the main source of ultraviolet radiation. It consists of UVB and UVA rays. UVBs are short waves that cause skin tanning or sunburn if in excess. UVAs are long waves that can penetrate deeper into the skin and cause damage such as photo ageing and pigmentation. Both UVA and UVB contribute to the risk of skin cancer.

  • 1 in 5 people will develop a skin cancer in their lifetime. It's the most common form of cancer in Ireland and it concerns both women and men.
  • 80% of all skin ageing can be attributed to UV exposure.

Are you shocked by this numbers? I was, but there are a few things you can do to reduce the risk of sun exposure.

Follow the SUN Smart code:

  • Seek shade
  • Protect your skin with clothing (any clothing will reduce the UV but also you can look for clothes with SPF label, made from a new lightweight fabric with special coating absorbing UV)
  • Wear hat and sunglasses labelled with UV protection
  • Use UVA and UVB Sunscreen. Use it often and in large quantities. Make sure that sunscreen is not out of date and was kept in a cool place.
  • Protect your children from UV damage

5 secrets for healthy skin this spring.

As the weather gets milder, there is no need for a heavy moisturiser any more. Here are some easy changes that we recommend you make to your skincare routine to ensure your skin is happy and glowing.

1. SWAP CLEANSER

Swap your creamy cleanser to a lightweight version such as cleansing gel or micellar lotion.

2. INCREASE EXFOLIATION

Get rid of dulling skin cells that build up during winter months by increasing the exfoliation to three times a week. You may also want to introduce the fruit acids to your new night time routine. Glycolic or Mandelic acids are great to stimulate the cell turnover and restore your skins healthy glow.

3. ADD SPF

Change your moisturiser to a lighter, hydrating formula with SPF 20+. Not only does it protect the skin against sunburn but more importantly it protects the skin against free radicals and pre-mature skin ageing. 

4. INTRODUCE SERUM

Serum is a product with high concentration of active ingredientsthat cannot be used continuously. It's recommended as a skin boost every season change. Look for one with vitamins, coenzyme Q10, essential oils or hyaluronic acid.
